Functional and decorative textiles about landscape by Claire Crompton
A found textile has many stories written in the marks of wear, use and alteration, written by its makers and wearers. Each person in a textile’s life leaves a hand print and their energy is held by the fibres. The textile becomes a container, one that is emptied when it is discarded. I interrupt the textile’s path from use to disuse and retain this energy and narrative.
My current work:
Textile Flora, repurposing threads and fabrics to create forms inspired by nature, exploring the processes, time and energy needed to transform materials from their redundant state.
Textile-ware, reinterpreting fabrics and threads into ceramic shapes, making small domestic pieces that will contain the story. I use traditional stitching techniques together with ceramic construction methods. Sometimes I include found objects, using textiles to divert them from their original purpose. By reinterpreting the textile into ceramic shapes I ask the viewer to look at the materials that clothe us with a fresh eye.
The basis of all my work is the desire to retain, re-use and revalue materials that have reached the end of one life-cycle, to create a new story for them and give them another path to travel.
